Interview w/ Houston Based Electronic Duo The Radio Broadcast

Give us your name and your roles in the band?

We are The Radio Broadcast Kristin Sings and plays keys Michael Plays keys as well as samples and loops

Take us behind the formation of the group and how you all met?

We met in a tattoo shop in Ohio 2005 and started playing music together in 2008 and formed TRB in 2009. Michael grew up playing drums in punk bands and Kristin grew up playing the piano but at the time when we met neither of us were involved in anything musically. We had both wanted to create our own punk band but realized after purchasing a guitar neither of us knew how to play nor had the time or patience to learn so we stuck with what we knew, drums and keys. Over the years our sound and style has changed along with the overall setup of the equipment we use.

Describe your early musical influences and how they have helped shape and inspire you to this day?

There is a lot of inspiration and musical influence to be found in the world and for us as far a music goes there are two major electronic groups that have stuck out the most and helped shape our minds to develop the sounds of The Radio Broadcast and that would be Crystal Castles and INNERPARTYSYSTEM. We love the DIY approach IPS takes when it comes to stage lighting and we love their heavy and raw electronic feel. With CC they come across sort of mysterious. We love their punk attitude in the electronic scene. We really like their lofi gritty electronic sounds.

How would you describe your band's sound to those who aren't familiar with you?

This is an excellent question and we can only describe what we want to project but in reality it is up to the listener to describe our style. We have always been stumped by this question because we do not feel we are one certain style. We perform a variety of electronic styles of music because we enjoy a variety of music. We have created tracks that are more synthwave or synthpop sounding and we have created tracks that are more witchhouse, trap, and dub influenced. We do not create with one sound or one style in mind we create by what we feel and not all creations are intended to be released on an album. With electronic music it is very easy to find a groove and a sound that works and just stick with it. We do not work like that. We do not want all of or music to sound the same. We try to stay fresh and current and we are continuously evolving and experimenting with new sounds and ideas. So for us to label our selves as one particular style is quite difficult for us.

What is the energy and joy you get out of playing and recording music, how big of a rush do you feel?

You know its not really so much a rush as it is more a feeling of wholeness or completeness. Music makes us who we are. With out music we would feel a big void in our life. We are all on this planet for a reason and we all have our own unique qualities and one gift to this planet is that we have to offer is music.

Talk about the recording of your latest release, and what it was like to put it all together?

The recording of our latest release too way longer than it needed to. At the time of us trying to record our current EP we were involved in several other projects other than our "normal" working lives or day jobs. We started recording our EP ARRIVED in 2016 and just released it at the beginning of January! We do all of our own recording and producing at our home studio.

So with all of that being said we would try to set sometime aside to work things out musically but with our busy lifestyle things didn't always work out according to plan and something always came up. So we would try to slip in a recording session here or there after work, during a practice session, or before a rehearsal with another band, or when ever we had a bit of free time and we had the energy to put into the music. Once we started getting our tracks pieced together we would burn them on to a cd or load them onto our phones and listen to them in the car or headphones or house speakers try get a sense of what we were laying down and make notes for the next recording session. It was an on going process that when we were finally finished we felt like a huge weight was lifted from us and now we can get to work on our album that Will NOT take as long and will hopefully be released by the end of summer beginning of fall.

Besides music, what do you like to do in your spare time?

We are both very artistic. We both work on video and photo editing as well as painting and other art projects. Aside from art we also LOVE retro gaming!

What's coming up next for you, any future shows or new music you'd like to promote?

Yes! We have LOTS of NEW Music on the Way! If you tune into our instagram we are currently dropping little snippets of new material that will soon be released. We are also in the middle of booking several shows as well as a small tour for later in the year

How can fans find out more info about you online?

If you go to our website TRBmusic.com you will find everything you are looking for TRB related. Music, Videos, Merch, Social Media, Streaming, Bio, and more!

Lastly, what is the one thing you enjoy the most about being in a band together? The fact the we can always trust and relay on each other! Together we have been musically involved with other people that would follow through with their words and it can be very frustrating when not everybody is on the same page or even in the same book or wanting to go a different direction than intended. At least with us we know we are both dedicated to what we do we are respectful towards each others thoughts and we will never miss a beat because we know both of us will be right there to boost and support each other.
